TREMOLO TO RELEASE
DEBUT FULL-LENGTH IN AUGUST
Fifty
Percent Of Album Sales To Be Channeled Through Love>Revenge Fund;
Fans To Determine Direction Of Fund
Oakland,
CA-based Tremolo is set to release its debut full-length album on
August 9th. Entitled "Love Is The Greatest Revenge," it will be
released on FLAGSHIP Recordings with national distribution via Fontana.
The disc is actually a re-working of an album that was available
previously via online outlets (CDBaby, Amazon, iTunes) and will
feature remixes of four of the tracks as well as two brand new songs
and a re-recording of the track "Promise Ring" (produced by John
Painter [Ben Folds]). Tremolo is the brain child of songwriter Justin
Dillon, and the album also features contributions from a number
of players: Steve Bowman (Counting Crows) on drums; Max Butler (Chuck
Prophet), Julian Coryell (Aimee Mann) and Dino Meneghin (Liz Phair)
on guitars; Kris Pooley (Jane's Addiction) and Ben Patterson on
keyboards; and Tim Hogan (Anna Nalick) on bass. The album was mixed
by Joe Zook (Sheryl Crow, Mick Jagger, Jewel). The touring version
of the band has a rotating line-up which is always fronted by Dillon.
From the catchy grit of "Evil Twin" to the gorgeous lilt of "Promise
Ring," Dillon & Co. meld the bluesy, dirty guitars of The Stones
and T-Rex with the lift-you-even-higher, anthemic bombast of U2,
and tie it up in a hugely attractive package known as Tremolo.
The
concept of praxis (what happens when people extend themselves to
do good and how their capacity to do good increases because of it)
prompted Dillon to do something radical with Tremolo's first full-length
album release. Fifty percent of all of the record royalties due
to Tremolo will be funneled into a benevolence trust fund. It will
be called the Love>Revenge Fund. Says Dillon, "The people who buy
the record will control this fund. They will, in fact, be the Board
of Trustees. They will decide where the money goes based on how
they would like to see the world change for the better." Through
online voting and forums, fans will be able to decide where the
trust fund money they contributed via record purchase will go --
be it cancer research, tsunami relief, AIDS hospice, anti-slavery
operations, or the charity of their choice. Fans will also be able
to gain exposure for the causes that matter most to them on the
site. "Music has a way of welling up something inside of us to be
better than we are," says Dillon. "And then what do you do with
that? To me, it's like I've written these songs as a way to connect
with humanity and hopefully uplift it, and I feel like it's the
responsibility of the record to act upon that and to follow through
on it. We are asking the fans, 'What would you do to change the
world?' We want to fund that idea." At the end of each fiscal quarter,
a check will be cut to the winning organization(s). This will not
cost the record company, publishing company, or any organization
connected to the project anything; the funds will come solely out
of monies due to Tremolo. When Tremolo tours, Dillon plans to apply
the same concept to the live shows.
"If
you have the resources to buy this record, you're doing pretty well
compared to the rest of the world," Dillon comments about the Love>Revenge
Fund. "This is not benevolence as a marketing tool. Given the way
the music industry is shifting these days, it is time for new ideas
and new ways of doing things. In the chaos of how music is purchased
today, there is opportunity for good. In this case, we wanted to
connect with others in a way that hasn't been done before. I want
to release not just a record, but an idea."
Prior
to signing with FLAGSHIP, Tremolo had already seen a healthy dose
of success from the EP, "You Were Born For This," from which New
Line Cinema borrowed the demo version of "Promise Ring" for their
film "How To Deal" (and Capitol Records included the song on their
soundtrack along with tracks by The Flaming Lips, Beth Orton, and
John Mayer). MTV used the song "Evil Twin" as the theme song for
their reality-based dating show "Dismissed," while they also incorporated
a number of Tremolo songs into several shows across the network
("Pimp My Ride," "Bands Reunited," "Newlyweds"). San Francisco radio
stations KLLC and KFOG chose Tremolo as their "new emerging artist"
and "up and comers," respectively, and KFOG spun "Evil Twin" in
rotation for a couple of months in late 2004. "Waiting Room" recently
spent six months in rotation on cable music service, Music Choice.
Tremolo has also graced network TV with play on "The Mountain" and
"North Shore."
Tour
dates will be planned beginning later this summer. www.tremolomusic.net

FLAGSHIP
RECORDINGS TO "SHIP OUT" VIA FONTANA
The
new label from longtime music industry veteran Marc Nathan, FLAGSHIP
Recordings, has signed a North American distribution deal with Fontana
Distribution. Fontana is the new indie distribution arm of UMVD,
and four FLAGSHIP releases are planned for Fontana Distribution
this calendar year.
Says
Fontana General Manager Steve Pritchitt: "We are extremely
pleased at Fontana to be distributing Marc Nathan's new venture,
FLAGSHIP Recordings. Marc has a long history with UMG, and his love
of music and dedication to artists is widely-known. FLAGSHIP's roster
of established and developing artists is very exciting to us. Marc's
first release, The Vanity Project, is a wonderful record and we
believe it will be very successful."
Nathan
echoes these sentiments, saying: "Because of my long standing
relationship with Steven Page and Barenaked Ladies, I had the opportunity
to obtain the US rights to Steven's "Vanity Project" and start my
own label. Jim Urie (UMVD President) said he'd be thrilled to have
us work together through Fontana. I told him I wanted to have the
flagship label of Fontana Distribution, and that's when I realized
I had just named my label. Now we have an opportunity to get this
great music out to the people!"
As
mentioned above, the first release on FLAGSHIP will be the self-titled
album from The Vanity Project, which features Barenaked Ladies'
lead singer Steven Page. The Vanity Project is a collaboration between
Page and his frequent co-writing partner, Stephen Duffy, and is
set for a June 21st release. The album includes 12 songs, 11 of
which are Page-Duffy compositions. The first track from the album,
"That's All, That's All" has been released to AAA and Non-Comm radio,
and Steven Page will be doing an extensive press, radio and retail
junket in late July. The Vanity Project will soon be found online
at www.vanity-project.com.
Brett
Dennen will be the second FLAGSHIP release and the self-titled album
is scheduled for a July 12th in-store date. The album was originally
released with limited online distribution last year on the Southern
California-based Three Angels and a Saint Label. The Oakdale, CA
songwriter has already caught the ears of influential KCRW DJ Chris
Douridas, who started spinning tracks from the album on Valentines
Day 2004, and has continued to play them repeatedly. This led to
airplay on other KCRW shows, as well as airplay on WXPN's World
Cafe. Says Douridas about Dennen's disc: "He's the unsigned
artist of the year. Rarely does music come along so unadorned, so
pure in spirit, and so eloquently written. 'Desert Sunrise' generated
more phone calls than anything I've played all year." Dennen
plans to tour heavily in support of his album and is confirmed to
play at this year's Bonnaroo Festival in June, as well as in New
York City at Central Park Summer Stage (supporting Shelby Lynne)
on July 15th. The track "Desert Sunrise" will go to Triple
A and Non-Comm radio formats in June. Dennen's website is www.brettdennen.com.
FLAGSHIP
is set to release "Love Is The Greatest Revenge" from
Oakland, CA-based band Tremolo on August 16th. The disc is actually
a re-working of an album that was available previously via online
outlets (CDBaby, Amazon, iTunes) and will feature remixes of four
of the tracks as well as two brand new songs and a re-recording
of the track "Promise Ring" (produced by John Painter
[Ben Folds]). Tremolo (www.tremolomusic.net)
has had songs from this album featured in film ("How To Deal") and
television ("The Mountain," "North Shore," "Pimp My Ride," and more)
and has received extensive local airplay on San Francisco stations,
as well as on the national satellite service Music Choice. The first
radio track is to be determined, and will ship to radio in early
July.
Rounding
out the FLAGSHIP 2005 release schedule will be "My Favorite
Revolution" from Los Angeles-based Eugene Edwards, hitting
stores on August 30th. Produced by Dave Peterson, the album had
a limited release on Tallboy Records before being picked up by FLAGSHIP.
"My Favorite Revolution" has already garnered a good deal
of press attention: the Los Angeles Times said, "It's easy
to see why Edwards has become a favorite on the L.A. pop scene Ð
his revved up live shows and sterling guitar licks put muscle behind
his melodies." Opined the OC Weekly: "He and his group...
play flat-out fun pop music with a deceptively sharp bite."
Britain's Uncut Magazine trumpeted: "Blaring forth with assured
vocals, cutting guitar figures, and a melodic sense that marries
Tom Petty to Squeeze, Edwards spills out 14 flawless songs obsessed
with jaded romance and, occasionally, even sadder affairs of the
heart." Although he performed everything on the album except
the drums, Edwards relies heavily on his band in a live setting.

FLAGSHIP
RECORDINGS PREPARES TO SET SAIL
Four Albums Planned For 2005 Release Schedule
Ahoy!
Long-time music industry executive Marc Nathan is pleased to announce
the launch of his new record label, FLAGSHIP Recordings, this summer.
Nathan, who has worked in a variety of promotion and A&R posts at
a number of labels over a 34-year-period (including stints at the
Vice Presidential level at Sire, Atlantic, and within the Universal
Music Group), plans to release a minimum of four titles this year
on FLAGSHIP. North American distribution for the label is in the
process of being concluded and will be announced shortly. FLAGSHIP
is a full service music company.
The
first release on FLAGSHIP will be the self-titled album from The
Vanity Project, which features Barenaked Ladies' lead singer Steven
Page. The Vanity Project is a collaboration between Page and his
frequent co-writing partner, Stephen Duffy, and is tentatively set
for a late-June release. The album includes 12 songs, 11 of which
are Page-Duffy compositions. A four track radio sampler will be
sent to AAA and Non Comm formats in late April.
Later
in the summer, FLAGSHIP is set to release "Love Is The Greatest
Revenge" from Oakland, CA-based band Tremolo. The disc is actually
a re-working of an album that was available previously via online
outlets (CDBaby, Amazon, iTunes) and will feature remixes of four
of the tracks as well as two brand new songs and a re-recording
of the track "Promise Ring," which is scheduled to be sent to pop
radio as the first single release.
Two
additional FLAGSHIP artists with titles for 2005 release will be
announced shortly.
Says
Nathan: "Because of a long standing relationship with Steven Page
and the band Barenaked Ladies, I was offered the opportunity to
create this new imprint and release The Vanity Project album. For
a while I had been looking for the motivation that would allow me
to get a venture like this off the ground, and Steven, his management
at Nettwerk, and a number of my friends in the industry were all
willing to take the leap of faith and supply the encouragement.
Now we move swiftly to get our distribution set up, with the intention
of putting great music into the marketplace over the next few months.
To say I am both passionate and excited about the formation of FLAGSHIP
Recordings and the release of The Vanity Project are perhaps the
greatest understatements of my lengthy career in this ever-changing
industry."
